The football season is back and the opening game, which is a Super Bowl rematch, is set for tonight. There is nothing like NFL action!
There has already been great football action in college, where college football fans learned that referees may not know what the true time of the game is. Or at least not consistently following the NCAA guidelines in that regard. So University of Michigan benefited from the snafu.
I like adhering to some traditions in certain aspects of society and life overall. I like the specialness of regionalism, as I have discussed in the past. But, I am not sure the tradition of decentralized officiating of college sports is something that should continue in the current environment.
I fully understand that there was a time it made sense based on the structure of college football. But the game is becoming more concentrated with the massive amount of realignment of conferences that have led to the consolidation of the big programs.
Now, I am not saying there is bias. But it just does not really make sense in the grand scheme of things to have conference aligned crews officiating games using the NCAA rules. So why not just have a centralized officiating group and the conferences just split the bill.
This will standardize quality through consistencies in training, understanding and application of the rules, and overall management. This could nip some of these controversies in the bud.
The college game has already changed greatly. But this is not really a major one. Just put the responsibility for the rule enforcer with the rule makers.
